Hose clamps


Hose clamps/clips are devices acting as an attachment and seal to a hose.

Hose clamps/clips are of different types, sizes, material and pressure.
But let discus firstly on the types.

TYPES OF HOSE CLAMPS/CLIPS:

The spring hose clamps, worm gear/screw band hose clamp,wire clamp, ear clamps and double bolt clamps 

THE SPRING CLAMP:
Its a narrow protrusion centerd clamp. Its made up of a spring steel and a sling protrusion on the both ends of the clamp.

Spring clamps are used by pressing together the two exposed tabs with a plier to expand the radius of the clip/clamp, before its pulled on the hose to grimp the hose to the barb.

Spring clamps are not used on a high pressure hoses but on a low or medium pressure hoses. This is because the force applied by the spring clamps are not enough to grimp high pressurehydraulic hoses 

Spring clamps/clips are used with an automotive cooling systems, automatic engine bays and some vaccume hoses.

THE WORM GEAR CLAMP/SCREW BAND CLAMP:

These type of clamps are formed with a band and a fitted in screw thread pattern. The worm gear screw clamps are used by pulling the clamp on the hose before using a screw driver to tighten it to the hose and the barb. Its known as a worm drive type of clip. The screw band clips /clamps requires no much pressure  or force.
The hoses best for these worm gear screw clamps are garden hoses, water hoses, vaccume hoses etc.

Hydraulic hoses

Take for instance: 2"Hydraulic hose R1AT is always 500 psi working pressure while 1/4" Hydraulic hose R1AT has a working pressure of 3000 psi. 

2) Hydraulic hoses 100R2AT:

Its a Hydraulic hose that has a double helix wire application. The pressure ranges from 1,500 psi to 5,000 psi depending on the size of the Hydraulic hose. For example, 

2" Hydraulic hose R2AT 1500 psi 1" Hydraulic hose R2AT 2000 psi, 1/4"Hydraulic hose R2AT 5,000 psi. From the above examples, you will understand that the bigger the size of hydraulic hoses, the smaller the pressure. While the bigger the pressure the smaller the size of the hydraulic hoses. 

3)hydraulic hose 100R12:

these type of hose comprises of multiples of four wire braids inside the hose cover. Its a very high pressure hoses use for oil drilling and other rig services. The working pressure of the hoses ranges from 3000 psi to 10,000 psi depending on the size. For example: 2"Hydraulic hose 100R12 has a pressure rating of 3,000 psi while the 1/4 " has a hydraulic pressure rating of 10,000 psi. It must be fitted with a hydraulic crimp fittings to avoid pressure leakage and pull out. 

4)hydraulic hose 100R13:

is a very high pressure hydraulic hose with a six wire reinforcement made up of a strong and tough helix wire or braids. Medium pressure hydraulic hoses 100R1AT.

Medium pressure hydraulic hoses are hoses working under the minimum burst pressure that a one wire(100R1AT) application can withstand.



Medium pressure hoses are manufactured by Aeroquip ,Parker ,Weatherhead ,Gates and other hydraulic hose manufacturing companies.



They are also called clothbody hoses. This is because they are formed with an external textile braid as the hose cover.

The hose textile cover helps to reduce or resist heat during services. They are more preferably to use where there in an increase in the temperature of the environment where the hose is working.

Some hydraulic medium pressure hoses has no textile braid. They only have a rough cover made up of a tough neoprene material.
Though it has the same working hose pressure with the textile braid but it cannot resist heat like the textile braid cover.




The maximum working pressure is between 500 psi to 1500 psi depending on the size.
For example: A 1/4 "medium pressure hydraulic hose may have the working pressure of 1500 psi to 2,000 psi,

while the same medium pressure hose but 2" in size may have a working pressure ranging from 400 psi to 600 psi.

The pressure of hydraulic hoses increases when their a decrease in the size and decreases when there is an increase in size.



The different between the textile braided medium pressure hose or clothbody hose and a rough body 100R1AT hose Is seen in the parker , Aeroquip catalogue.


A crimper fitting can be used on medium pressure hydraulic hose. But the most commonly used fitting is the Medium pressure Reusable type.


Clothbody hoses can be crimped easily with the use of a hydraulic crimping machine and can also be attached to the hydraulic reusable fittings fitting with a hand operating reusable device.

A hose king nipple is a barbed end nipple with a threaded end used in hose connections.


The barbed end of the hose king nipple hold the nipple to the hose.
Its position is between the double bolt clamp and the hose itself.

Hose king nipples or barbed nipples do the same work with a mulconroy fitting or hydraulic crimper fittings .
The only different is that a hose crimper or mulconroy fittings has a groove at which the sleeve or its sleeve will be held firmly.
While the barbed nipple has no groove nor a sleeve.

Hose king nipples can be used on a hydraulic hose that has a less 100R2AT wire application. But its more safer to be used on air and water hoses with a maximum working pressure of 300 psi.

Hydraulic hose pressure are classified in three categories


1.) The low pressure :

High pressure ranges from 1,500 Psi to more than 30,000 Psi.
High pressures are applied on hydraulic hoses and Rotary hoses.
High pressure is applied to a two wire braided hose(100R2AT), four wire braid( 100R12) and six wire braided hose( 100R13).
And all hoses that withstand a higher pressure must be grimped with a hydraulic hose crimper fittings

Weco union fittings are wing type of coupling used on heavy duty Vessel, Hoses and Machines.



They are formed in a socket weld or threaded .
They are made of stainless steel or carbon steel and varies from size to size.

But on the case of a barb king nipples ,its not always safe to use it with weco union unless the barb nipple is to be used with a crimper machine to grip the hose.

Hose king nipples are fitted directly into the hose before grimping them to the hose manually(clamps)or mechanically.



The use of manual grimping of hose king nipples requires a double bolt clamp or clips but it depends on the pressure such hose can withstand.
Machanical process of using a hose king nipple or barb requires the use of a crimper machine with the use of sleeves.

Hose king nipples varies in size and they ranges from 1/4" in diametre to 14 ".

Hose king nipples has two different types of threading.


A). The smooth thread king nipples: its a type of thread that is fine in nature. Its more smoother or finer than normal npt threadings. They are usually found on water pumps with female threads.

B). Rough hose king nipples: they are the normal type of king nipple that has an Npt threading . They are universal system of threading because almost every system requires this threadings.

Foot valves acts as a medium between hydraulic hoses and other fuel and oil hose during a filtering process.

During operation the check valve opens when a suction pressure is applied and closes when the applied pressure is withdrawn.

This means that the foot valves allow and block respectivly the passage of particles into the hose.

It can have a fine thread or a normal Npt threading.
It can be used together with other couplings like using a crimper fittings ( mucunroy ) or have a camlock connection to it.
They varies from sizes to sizes. From 2" to 12" or more inside diametre.

2). The flanged Foot valves are also made of cast iron ,stainless or brass materials. The above material is also connected to the check valve inside. The only different between the two is that the former above is a threaded type while the later is a flanged type.

The flange type comprises iether by 150 lbs or 300 lbs depending on the pressure of the pressure pumps.

Foot valves are good and they does a filteration work also and not just a medium for particle transfer.

Factors to consider before selecting your hydraulic hoses and other hoses.


(1)DIMENSIONS:
The dimensions includes the hose internal and external diammetre.

The internal diametre is the inside circumference of the hydraulic hose.this inside circumference determines the hose size which is measured in inches or in milimetre. The smaller the size of the hose ,the higher the pressure of the hose.
Also the bigger the size of the hose, the smaller the pressure of the hydraulic hose. The external diametre is the outside diametre of a hose. It is the body of a hydraulic hose exposed to weather or abrassion. The materials used on the external diametre are made to be tough inorder to make the hose withstand abrassion.so when you want to determine the right hose ensure that the measurement of the external diametre corresponds to the area by which the hose will pass through and the ability to withstand external heat and conditions. The diametre of every hydraulic hose is very essential most especially in the area where enough pressure are used.


2).LENGTH :
The area where the selected hydraulic hoses are to be used must be measured and crimped safely.


crimping involves the use of manual or electric device or machine to fit a hose.
Inorder to avoid joining two hoses together, an accurate measurement must be taken. Machines or pumps works very well when the hydraulic hose is at a straight length without any seam. Most hoses are measured in feets ,yards or in metres. In order to avoid any mistake,get your standard tape and study the accurate measurement.
A coil of hydraulic hoses normally ranges from 20 metres to 100metres length depending on the sizes.


3). MATERIALS TO BE CONVEYED:
material that are transfered from the hydraulic hoses must be clear to you whether they has any effect on the hose

. All hydraulic hoses are designed to convey hydraulics only and while oil hoses are used to transfer oil and diesel.
Make sure that the hose material are made of good chemical compositions. Oil and hydraulic hoses are made of N B R(Nitrile butadiene tube) which has the ability to resist oil.
Both the tube and the cover can be made of the same chemical composition. Again,if you are using oxygen or gas ,ensure also that the hose you are using is comprises F P M(Florocarbon rubber materials. Then if your using the hose for fire fighting make sure its rubber composition is made of CHLOROPRENE OR ETHYLENE OXIDE. When the right hose is used for a specified use on hydrants it make it durable and also curbs environmental pollution.


4).TEMPERATURE : This is one of the major factor to consider.You must know the climate condition of where you are applying the hydraulic hose.

Is the temperature too high or too low ,can the hoses you selected adapt to the heat, or the material that are being coveyed be affected by the temperature ? Normally, every hoses that works under a higher temperature must has textile braided on the hose acting as a cover against heat. These external braided material covers both the hose tube itself and the liquid conveyed. You should also know whether you can make use of stainless iron coated plies .both the textile and the iron works well but the iron is very essential in transfering bitumen. Hose materials that are made of Epdm combination can resist heat but incase of a very high steam or exhause its preferable to use the stainless iron coated hose.

Transperent/garden hoses are not the best hose for corrosive acid chemical. It can stand it but not for a long duration.

Why I prefer using a metric thread, NPT threads,and JIC thread ?

All my hydraulics hydraulic crimper fittings are made up of an NPT, JIC and Metric threading.


Whenever I start to fit in or crimp any of my Parker hydraulic hoses , Eaton and Vickers hydraulics , I must make sure that each of my hydraulic hoses are crimped normal with the fittings.


Sometimes, I make use of a manual type or Parker reusable fittings hydraulic fittings instead an electric crimper.

Some NPT threadings are not the same.
Any NPT threading are grouped into rough threads and smooth threads.

When I want to crimp my Eaton hydraulic hose. I prefer using the NPT thread to the weco union or camlock fitting connection. But when I want to use the NPT smooth threading, I will make use of my hydraulic pressure pumps.


But for other hydraulic jobs. I may use a metric threading or JIC threadings.

My weco union connection is leaking hydraulics. Please, somebody should tell me what to do.

My weco union connection is leaking out hydraulics.
I have tried every possible means to see that my Parker and Eaton hydraulic hoses is discharging with the normal pressure but each time I start my hydraulic pressure pumps the weco union will be leaking.




I have inspected the hammer part of the fmc weco union but I see everything as normal.

The hydraulic pressure that I am working with is a Parker hydraulic hose pressure of 150 psi. And each time I start the hydraulic pump, the weco union fig 100 will be leaking out hydraulics.



Please , what do you think is the cause of the weco union leakage .
